BIDS autohide not always working
hide (like dataset or solution or properties) and they DONT autohide always
... I end up having to toggle autohide off and on again to make it hide ...
this is getting really annoying.I have it all the time. I have come across some really bad bugs in this
version. Auto-hide not working being one of them. Seems small at first, but
when you have to do it about 100 times a day, it becomes very frustrating.
They need to get this fixed. I don't remember having it in VS2003.

visual studio cannot close because there is a modal dialog active ... when I
have closed absolutely EVERY WINDOW in the tool ... there is nothing but a
SHELL left... so I end up having to force the task to end with task manager
... not a good thing. I am talking about the scaled down version of VS2005
that comes with reporting services ... not the full-blown install of VS2005.
Seems it should be addressed and fixed.

BI Web Intelligence
between RS and Crystal. We are primarily a MS shop with enterprise
licensing.
Business Objects (BO) has presented me with a really nice set of tools aside
from their reporting solution. Aside from reporting I would like to get
more involved with BI (dataming and cube analysis). At some point I would
like to have the end users browse the cube/universe data for quick adhoc
analysis.
BO presented me with really nice web intelligence software which is all
integrated with the BO product line. The products were: BO Web
Intelligence, BO Predictive Analysis, BO Set Analysis. These products seem
easy to use and the data can all be analyzed through the web once the
developer creates the middle layer.
I know MS has SSAS which contains the cube technology and data mining.
Do they offer a packaged product ready for enduser use similiar to BO?
Do you need to program your needs in the BI environment to develop what your
looking for?
Is there a way to get the SSAS cubes designed for end users to access
through the web/intranet?
Thanks.Basically you need to see what exactly you require. Both offer same things
but MS is cost effective solution and one stop solution. You also get
everything packged and moreover the SSRS comes free with Enterprise version
of SQL SERVER. So if you are planning for a small / mid size then this will
be ideal for you.

Take a look at Microsoft Performance Point 2007, as it will help you do much
of what you're looking for.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/performancepoint/FX101680481033.aspx
Hope this helps.
Ted|||Hey, Brian
One of Microsoft's biggest ambitions is to be leading the Business
Intelligence (BI) arena. In 2007, they have announced the release of
several new products and integration with the Office suite (especially
Excel). I would really consider the Microsoft suite of BI offerings
that will be coming up in the next year. Like Ted said,
PerformancePoint will be a key product to get into BIPM, and will allow
users to view scorecard technology, data mining, cube analysis, etc.
They will be leveraging a lot of their BI offerings with Office and
SharePoint, in order to provide the end users access to data w/ tools
like Excel and their web browser (IE) which they're already familiar
with and comfortable using.
Since your company is a MS shop, and they already run SQL Server, the
license for Reporting Services is included, so you can have a pretty
good reporting engine up and running fairly quickly. Reporting
Services can connect to several data sources including OLTP and OLAP,
such as SQL Server DB, Analysis Services cubes, Oracle, XML web
services (RS 2005), and in the SP2 of SQL 2005, they will be adding
support for Hyperion. If you already have cubes setup in an Analysis
Services database, you can simply write the MDX (or use the MDX query
generator in RS 2005) for the report query, then design your report
layout, and the learning curve for Reporting Services is fairly
minimal.
I have seen a lot of companies that used Crystal reports as their main
reporting tool, move away from that and migrate all their reports to
Reporting Services because the licensing is much more cost effective --
it's included w/ their SQL Server license!
I would definitely recommend spending some time in the MS BI web site
to learn about their future offerings in that area.

Sorry for this mistake.
and what about the SP2?
with SSIS I suffer slow opening only if my solution was closed and if my
some packages are opened. When I reopen the solution, this reopen all these
packages and takes few times because SSIS validate each package.
You can improve this by changing the validate metadata option of your
connection to false (true by default until SP2, but after a package is
created you have to change this your self)
You can also check the "work offline" option before opening your big
solution.

BI and shipping line companies
Hi all,
As u know the first step in a BI solution is determining the BI goals. I need some samples of shipping line companies which have a BI solution. I have read so many customer stories from many BI corporations but nearly all of them focus on generating integrated systems and reports. I need more info if you can help me!

yes i have some sample if u want then send me mail.

BI Accelerator Cube Reprocess Problems
but can't seem to get the last few kinks worked out.
I have a cube made by BI that has monthly partitions. The problem is
that whenever I add new dimention information (which should be an
incremental update), I have to reprocess the entire cube. This is not
really an option, since it takes 57 hours to do that. So, does anyone
have a suggestion why BI is not doing an incremental update?
Thanks,
Chris

Two comments:
1) Re: "The problem is that whenever I add new dimention information (which
should be an incremental update), I have to reprocess the entire cube." Can
you be more specific what you are using? To "add" this new information are
you doing a full process of the dimension? Or an incremental process of the
dimension? I am a bit confused because you said "which should be an
incremental update" -- is it or not?
One of the things that you need to remember is that when you do a full
process of a non-changing dimension (regardless if the data changed or not),
then a full process of the cube is always required. This is because a full
process of the dimension could have caused changes in the hierarchy, which
would have likewise changed all of the aggregates -- which is a full
reprocess.
2) Re: "This is not really an option, since it takes 57 hours to do that."
You should be looking at improving that time. The general rule of thumb that
I use is that a server-class machine processing a typical partition should
be able to process about 1 million rows per minute. If your system is not
getting performance close to that then you should be looking at the general
best practices outlined in the SSAS Performance Guide at:

Look in the documentation, I believe there is a way to force it do an
incremental only.
As a worst-case, you can modify the packages by-hand for only do an
incremental.
However I had thought that we had this worked out correctly so that we
detected if an incremental or full was required, e.g. deleting a member
forces a full.

Bestpractice for varying outputformat
Hello
I need an advice for an easy maintainable and highly flexible solution using SSIS. We're supplying our customers with an exportservice. The data is extracted from different tables, all with the same tableschema, fairly easy to create a foreach-container and iterate through the tablenames and extract data and use a flatfile destination to write it to...
But the not so easy part is to have different exportformats and still be using only one package. I could maybe use different ConnectionManagers for the FlatFileDestination, but that's not a very easy maintainable solution in my world. Our Customers will soon demand a webinterface where they can select necessary columns and apply different formatting for example they would demand the datetime to be '2006-12-24' or maybe '12/24/2006' etc. for alot of the available columns.
Any good suggestion on how to accomplish such a task?
Kind regards

best way to move dtsx to a new server and be able to edit the package
What is the best way to move a SSIS solution to a new server so that I can edit the solution when I have problems?
Thanks,
Copy the .dtsx files to the server using a mapped network drive, or other similar techniques suitable to your environment.|||Okay I have done this. I have added it as a stored package.
How how do I edit this package? Can I edit it from enterprise manager or do I have to open up the development envionment. And if I go into the development environment and go to open project, what file can I open?
Thanks for the help.
|||Packages have to be modified in BIDS. If you are storing it in SQL Server you have to export it to the file system in order to modify it. If you are storing in the file system, you can just open it directly (though to get debugging features you need to have the packages in a project).
